Historic Residential
Kiehnel and Elliott
2024

Renovating a historic home in Coral Gables is never just about preservation—it is about dialogue between past and present. This project centered on a residence originally designed by the renowned architectural duo Kiehnel and Elliott, the same visionaries behind the Coral Gables Congregational Church and Coral Gables Elementary School. Their early work helped establish the city’s architectural identity, blending Mediterranean influences with the optimism of a new community in South Florida.

When we first approached the restoring the home for David, he asked us about the home’s Mission-style. We explained how the original Mission-style appearance of this home reflected a trend that had only recently made its appearance in Florida at the time of its construction. Mediterranean-style had been intentionally adopted by the creators of Coral Gables and was the theme of the exciting new city. Rather than merely replicating or freezing the structure based upon still photographs of that period, we sought to breathe new life into it—enriching its story while remaining faithful to the genius of its original creators.

For the Interiors, we engaged in a unique collaboration with Studio 13.1 of Milano, Italy, a design consultancy celebrated for their refined approach to interiors and historic spaces. Together, we envisioned a transformation that would move beyond the Mission style, creating an elaborate sense of antiquity. The intent was not to modernize for the sake of novelty, but to restore and reinterpret the house through the lens of Kiehnel and Elliott’s original aging techniques—patinas, surface treatments, and textural layers that imbued their work with a richness often overlooked today.

Walls were carefully treated to recover their timeworn authenticity, wood and stone were sourced to reveal their origin and natural character. Decorative details were reintroduced in ways that celebrated craftsmanship over convenience. The result was a home that feels both timeless and intimate: not simply a relic of the past, but a living testament to the artistry of its original architects, reframed for contemporary life in Coral Gables.
