About Us

We design schools, churches, restaurants, multi-family buildings, medical buildings and homes.

We consider the overall impact on both South Florida’s built and un-built Environments. Our traditions of passive energy design, open-air environments and atmospheric transparency came from our research and adopted from Mid-Century Architects Igor B. Polevitzky, FAIA and Alfred Browning Parker, FAIA.

Although we are often sought for our Modern Homes, most of our projects are Historic Restorations requiring quasi-judicial proceedings, Restaurants, Hospitality and projects having complex permitting situations. Working in Miami, New York and Atlanta, we are known for our proactive role in the Construction Industry, and lawful approach to improving South Florida’s permitting climate.

WHAA promotes its buildings as efficient, environmentally and culturally-sensible. We average a typical workload of 63-72 active projects, and about two-thirds of our work is designated Historic or aged structures of more than fifty years of age.

Christopher Muchow
Associate

BIOGRAPHY / WORK MISSION
At a young age, Chris’s passion and talents for planning were realized after he etched his first urban designs into his grandparents’ driveway using chalk. At the age of seventeen, Chris was invited to participate in the National Grid Pipeline Engineering Program. Building on this unique and early opportunity, Chris introduced himself into fields of architecture, plumbing, electrical and civil engineering.

At the age of eighteen, Chris moved from Long Island, New York to The National Architectural Accrediting Board (“NAAB”)— accredited University Of Miami School of Architecture earning an Advanced degree in Architecture and minor in Education.

Studio professors immediately identified his talents and in his sophomore year deferred Chris to work at WHAA. Mastering parallel professional and educational careers for the remainer of the program, Chris embraced the challenges that came with applying his talents in the field.

Chris’s vision for architecture incorporates the realities of engineering and structure without compromise to the building’s design intent. All of WHAA’s construction detailing and documentation needed to make Construction Documents comes from Chris. Under the title Associate, Chris translates the components of a building vision into reality.

Yailyn O. Barrera
Principal Architect

Yailyn O. Barrera, AIA, NCARB is principal at WHAA.
Barrera’s extraordinary aptitude for architecture was recognized early in her higher education experience at Florida International University when she was recommended to join to WHAA by her design studio professor and classmate in 2019.

Since graduation, Barrera designed some of the firm’s best-known projects; incld. Luxury Residences, Mirabella at Fountainbleau Miami Beach and VOUS Church.

To Barrera, architecture is not only a background or foreground to everyday life; it may be the most significant investment in a client’s life.

Barrera’s talent, vision and commitment to work is renown throughout South Florida, and identified for innovative design strategies, exemplary performance and compelling architecture.

Barrera is inspired by architects Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Tadao Ando and the organic architecture of Zaha Hadid.

William Hamilton Arthur IV, AIA, NCARB
Principal Architect

BIOGRAPHY / WORK MISSION

Wm. H. Arthur IV, AIA, NCARB is a third-generation architect with an academic background from The University of Florida in Design, Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning and Latin American Studies. William’s certificate in Historic Preservation was earned under the guidance of former State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) and former Associate Director for Cultural Resources of the National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Department of Interior in Washington, D.C., Janet Mathews, Ph.D.
Within the last ten years, William has been involved in more than 1,200 construction projects throughout Florida, Georgia and New York; More than one hundred construction projects in the City of Coral Gables.

William has sought to design from a perspective that is both culturally-sensitive and historically-minded. William’s personal heritage in South Florida began since his grandfather working in Coral Gables since 1949 with Mid-Century Architect, Igor B. Polevitzky, FAIA and William’s own work with Alfred Browning Parker’s son, Robin Parker. Finding merit not only the constructions that he studied, but also their impact on the people who utilize them, William developed a sense of obligation to the city and the unique fabric of architecture that forms it.

William was recognized by the U.S. Treasury Department for his research in examining how buildings function without the use of air-conditioning. He was granted a special travel license by Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and represented the United States in three Urban Planning Charrettes taking place in Havana, Cuba. William built his architectural firm based upon the practices and techniques learned from this rare opportunity to utilize local government as an asset rather than a challenge.

William serves on the Alumni and Professional Advisory Board for The University of Florida School of Architecture.

William is influenced by his grandfather and mentors Alfonso Perez-Mendez, AIA, Guy Peterson FAIA and Allan Shulman, FAIA. William often refers to architects Ludwig Mies Van der rohe, William Van Alen, Phillip Johnson, Oscar Niemeyer, Luis Barragán , Edward Durell Stone, Carme Pinós, Denman Fink, Jean Nouvel and Louis Khan.
