About Us

We consider the overall impact on both South Florida’s built and un-built Environments. Our traditions of passive energy design, open-air environments and atmospheric transparency came from our research, and were adopted from our roots with prominent Miami Modern (MiMo) architect, Igor B. Polevitzky, FAIA and interests in Mid-Century Architect Alfred Browning Parker.

Although we are often sought for our Modern Homes, most of our projects are Historic Restorations requiring quasi-judicial proceedings, Restaurants, Hospitality and projects having complex permitting situations. Working in Miami, New York and Atlanta, we are known for our proactive role in the Construction Industry, and lawful approach to improving South Florida’s permitting climate.

WHAA promotes its buildings as efficient, environmentally and culturally-sensible. We average a typical workload of 63-72 active projects, and about two-thirds of our work is designated Historic or aged structures of more than fifty years of age.

Angela A. Anzola
Associate

Angela A. Anzola’s Association at WHAA is Project Director.
Anzola graduated from Florida International University in 2022.

Recommended to WHAA by a classmate prior to graduating, Anzola is known for consonant organization and ability to understand complex permitting matters, make her aptly suited to the assignment of WHAA’s Project Director.

Anzola proceeded to direct some of the firm’s most complex permitting situations, such as navigating City of Miami’s code enforcement section for Madroom Hospitality, bringing chef Micheal White’s Mirabella concept to Fontainebleau and Jimmy Butler’s BIG FACE Coffee band to the Design District.

Anzola is also an artist and painter in her own right, often working in plastic mediums such as oils and water.

Yailyn O. Barrera
Principal Architect

Yailyn O. Barrera is principal at WHAA.
Barrera’s extraordinary skill and aptitude for architecture was recognized early in her higher education experience when recommended to join to WHAA by her design studio professor and classmates prior to graduating from Florida International University in 2019.

Barrera, who has shown the highest average of excellence throughout her five year course of the school’s program was awarded “equitable excellence in design”.

Barrera proceeded to design some of the firm’s best-known projects; the Lennox and Lage Residences, Mirabella at Fountainbleau and VOUS Church.

Barrera recognizes architecture for most is a background or foreground to everyday life, however, for the client, may be the most significant investment in their life.

Barrera has become identified throughout South Florida for her innovative design strategies, integrating exemplary performance with compelling architecture. The imagery and volume of Barrera’s work has become renown throughout South Florida, and is frequently noted for her qualities of talent, vision, and commitment, producing consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the South Florida environment through the art of architecture.

Barrera’s influences for design remain unknown, however, it is believed her work is inspired by architects Louis Sullivan, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Marcio Kogan.

BIOGRAPHY / WORK MISSION

Wm. H. Arthur IV, AIA, NCARB is a third-generation architect in the city of Coral Gables, with an academic background in Urban and Regional Planning, Historic Preservation and Latin American Studies. William’s certificate in Historic Preservation was earned under the guidance of former State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) and former Associate Director for Cultural Resources of the National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Department of Interior in Washington, D.C., Janet Mathews, Ph.D. William has been involved with more than 1,200 construction projects, including more than 100 in the City of Coral Gables within the last eight years.

William has sought to design from a perspective that is both culturally-sensitive and historically-minded. William has a personal heritage in South Florida, since his grandfather’s working in the city since 1949 with Mid-Century Architect, Igor B. Polevitzky, FAIA and William’s own work with Alfred Browning Parker’s son, Robin Parker. Finding merit not only the constructions that he studied, but also their impact on the people who utilize them, William developed a sense of obligation to the city and the unique fabric of architecture that formed it.

In 2008, William was recognized by the U.S. Treasury Department for his research in examining how buildings function  without the use of air-conditioning. He was granted a special travel license by Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and represented the United States in three Urban Planning Charrettes taking place in Havana, Cuba between 2008 and 2011. Drawing pre-revolution relationships between the architecture within Miami and Havana, William continues to build upon the practices and techniques learned from this rare opportunity to utilize local government as an asset rather than a challenge.

William is influenced by his grandfather and mentors Alfonso Perez-Mendez, AIA, Guy Peterson FAIA and Allan Shulman, FAIA. William often references architects Ludwig Mies Van der rohe, William Van Alen, Phillip Johnson, Oscar Niemeyer, Luis Barragán , Edward Durell Stone, Carme Pinós, Denman Fink, Jean Nouvel and Louis Khan.
